Bring Your Construction Knowledge to Work That Matters

Explore the Role

Bring your construction knowledge, field judgment, and professionalism to a role where your work has visible impact every day.

The City of Urbandale is hiring a Building Inspector to help ensure projects across our community are safe, compliant, and built to a standard residents can be proud of. In Urbandale, you’ll work across a wide variety of inspections and project types — from residential improvements like decks and fences to commercial and industrial development. You’ll solve problems in real time, work with people across sectors, and help keep projects moving the right way.

This role is for a professional who knows construction, understands the field, communicates with confidence, and can represent the City well in every interaction. You will work with contractors, residents, other departments, outside agencies, and development partners. You will be expected to be firm, fair, and professional — someone who uses the code to guide decisions, explain expectations, and help people move forward. If that sounds like the kind of work you take pride in, you may be exactly who we’re looking for.

More than inspections

This is public service in action

Every interaction in this role reflects on the City of Urbandale. You’ll represent the City with contractors, residents, other departments, government entities, and taxpayers. That means professionalism matters here. Communication matters here. Judgment matters here. The goal is not to tell people what they want to hear. The secret sauce

What kind of person thrives here

The kind of person who thrives here brings real construction knowledge to the field and knows how to balance professionalism with good judgment. They know how to be firm without being difficult, stay calm in conflict, and avoid shooting from the hip. They can explain decisions clearly and credibly, are comfortable using technology and digital tools, and are able to anticipate problems and solve them in real time. Just as importantly, they can manage a full workload without constant hand-holding, work well with a team, and communicate effectively day to day.

Collaborative Culture

The Work, Honestly

No two weeks look exactly the same here. In this role, you may inspect residential projects such as decks, fences, additions, and remodels, as well as commercial construction, industrial buildings and facilities, and systems related to solar, electrical, and plumbing work. You may also support projects tied to broader economic development activity in a growing community. Because Urbandale is small enough to stay versatile, this is a role where you will truly do it all—giving you more variety, more ownership, and more opportunity to strengthen your judgment across a wide range of projects and disciplines.
